No compromises when it comes to safety
Despite our staff’s daily routine and long employment with AFS Aviation Fuel Services GmbH, we remain acutely aware that we are working with hazardous substances in a sensitive sector. That is why every measure to prevent accidents is justified. This applies to the protection of people, facilities and the environment. We pay consistent and systematic attention to health and safety at work, and to ensuring that equipment and vehicles are in perfect working order. We take the guidelines for handling environmentally harmful substances very seriously and, as a member of the Energy Institute (EI) and the Technical Fuel Group (TFG) of the IATA, we continue to develop them in line with the latest state of the art in collaboration with the Joint Inspection Group.
Our own ASA “Arbeiten Sicher Ausführen” (Working Safely) management programme is regarded as exemplary and complements external inspections and international safety standards for aircraft fuelling and fuel storage.

Safety first
The HSSE management system for optimum safety
The specific safety requirements for the storage of kerosene or aviation fuel and aircraft refuelling demand rigorous standards for health, occupational safety, security and environmental protection: Health, Safety, Security and the Environment – HSSE. This is the only way to protect the health of our employees, contractors and all other persons involved in the process, as well as the integrity of the facilities. The careful use of resources also plays an important role in this.
For this reason, we have introduced our HSSE management system. This ensures that our personnel, operational, technical and commercial processes are continually reviewed to fulfil our goal of being a safe, efficient and customer-friendly service provider for refuelling and tank farm operations at airports.
Supporting and challenging our staff
We invest heavily in training our staff.
This promotes motivation and confidence. It is particularly important to us that ‘critical situations’ are identified quickly. We take precautions not only directly with ground staff, but at all levels right up to management. This helps us avoid bottlenecks, poor communication or unexpected developments. The aim is to ensure that short-term measures can be taken at any time to avert risks to health, equipment or the customer’s planning. Our internal inspectors regularly check whether our staff and our systems are prepared for this.
HSSE rules for transparent risk prevention
With our HSSE rules for our day-to-day safety, we set an example for the industry. We encourage our employees to adapt these principles for personal use and to apply them beyond the workplace – as these rules can be beneficial in many situations in life. The protection of our facilities is of paramount importance to us. Access to them is therefore restricted to reliable and security-vetted individuals who are authorized to operate within these areas strictly in accordance with our rules and the airport security regulations.
For us, environmental protection means the consistent avoidance of waste, pollution and other forms of impact. To keep these impacts and risks as low as possible, we invest in state-of-the-art technologies when designing our vehicles and facilities.
Sustainability
Sustainability is one of the key drivers for AFS. In all operational areas – whether on the apron or at the fuel depots – our processes are continuously reviewed and optimized with regard to sustainability. Reducing CO₂ emissions is not a one-off measure, but an ongoing commitment that is embedded in everything we do.
With the introduction of e-dispensers, we achieve near-zero emissions, eliminate oil consumption and spillage, reduce noise pollution and ensure that no exhaust fumes are released during fuelling. The batteries can be charged using green electricity, and maintenance is limited solely to the battery system itself.
Digitalization
Advancing digitalization is a central component of our strategic corporate development. We make targeted use of modern technologies to optimize our processes, strengthen our competitiveness and lay the foundations for sustainable growth.
We are actively shaping the future – in a data-driven, efficient and innovation-oriented manner. At the same time, ensuring IT security is a top priority in order to meet requirements such as NIS-2.
